Fantasy General's units #1

Fantasy General (1996) is one of old Turn based strategy game with hexed grid in game field. To be honest, its gameplay is not as solidly great as -say- Heroes of Might and Magic 3 in my humble opinion that is. Perhaps the reason i don't enjoy it because there's rule book/manual about it that i don't bother read it before play the game. But my main interest to this game: the units that consist of 4 races/category (Mortal, Magic, Mech, and Beast). And today i want to show some of them, reader.
Steamphont
Admit it! You feel very excited to see an elephant with cannons, right? You can see that there's no one who either rides the elephant or operates the cannons. Then surely, the elephants are well-trained to operate the cannon. Sadly, Steamphont is quite-low tier of mech cavalry. I presume because their major parts is still organic/biologic, that are considered flaw. Still, Steamphont is serious threat to any peanut plantations around the world.
Elf Knights
Elf are renowned for archery and magic. Equestrian? Nope. You lost me, Fantasy General. At least not riding on horse. Moose are more appropriate, perhaps? Anyway in status screen, he looks refined (and horseless) and charismatic with decent armor padding. But in field, he looks like Santa Claus's elf which is certainly unsuitable. Yes, they help Santa on Christmas. On the other time they ride horse to battle? No. Again you lost me, Fantasy General.
Gripper

If Bowlers aren't introduced to enjoyment of dark-elixir drinking and boulder throwing, they become savage and slowly turns into grippers. They just want to grab someone/something and crush the within their hand so bad. "Why they don't punch? That hands are big and strong enough to deliver big damage via punch instead of grab tightly" you said? They're too vicious to think about that. They are light infantry but that doesn't mean you can treat them lightly.
Fire Archers

"What did you mean we only need to use fire arrows instead of whole set of fire archery like this? Stand aside, wuss!" said fire archers. I believe their armor, skin, and their guts are made of asbestos. No i don't complain their earnestness of way of fire. As a Pyro, i'm happy for them. Fire archer's tier is higher than rifleman and pistolier. Suggesting that to beat firearm you have to be adept at fire arm, i mean weapon that's entirely on fire.
Ogre Centaurs

Ladies and gentlemen, allow me to introduce such enigmatic brute creature: Ogre Centaurs! The combination of Centaur's elegance and speed with Ogre's brawny strength! Come to think of it, they resemble Motaro from Mortal Kombat 3, right? So the mixture between Ogre and Centaur is quite working, unlike...
Ogre Griffons

This abomination is ludicrous, IMO. Sure it looks and sounds better if he is 'Winged Demon'. But, no. Fantasy General is truly rebel. By the way, i don't think Ogre can "mix naturally" with either Griffin or Centaur. So i assume they're result of diabolical mambo-jambo by powerful overlord. For more sensible lore.
Rhino Knights

"Rhino can't be knighted? Say that again to my face! I dare you!" said Rhino Knight. Rhino Knights don steel plating over their already thick skin. Not only they're practically perfect bio-ram, they're charismatic and charming as what you expect from knighted ones. Female rhinos totally want to marry them. It's true.
Serpent Riders

Nothing wrong with either the serpent or the orc rides it. Playing Heretic in my childhood, makes me reject these cavalries as serpent riders. That's all. Also serpent rider's tier is lower than rhino knight's and ogre centaur's. But that fact doesn't make the Orc riders feel downed. They're spirited enough to joust any pawns of good side before them. They just have to be consistent to whether use spear or jousting lance. That's my only advice.
Balloon Hangers

Demoman_laughlong01.wav. Excuse me! Seriously, though. The idea of bloke with rifle, that's strapped with balloon is just stupid. I mean it's magically stupid! Even tactician in era pre-world war 1 will immediately reject this idea for being too ridiculous. But you have to admit the dedication of the idiot riflemen to go through special training to aim accurately and resist air sick during deployment. Also you can shout "I can fly!" and have fun with this method until Ogre Griffons come to clobber you. Leaving you practically helpless.
Flamer
What is faster than Pyro? That's right! Pyro on horse, which is best description for Flamer. Actually you can rename any units in Fantasy General so you're more than allowed to rename anyone with anything in your imagination. There's another positive feature on Fantasy General. Anyway, there's certainly high qualification for flamer's horse. Horse that's not afraid of fire only, won't cut it. It has to be pyromaniac as well as the flamer himself. Flamers could be another Spy's worst nightmare.
Spirit Riders

Spirit rider is so full of spirit. He has the mighty beard and moustache of rider of Rohan. But i'll be frank, he's very less interesting than flamer (judgment ambiguity, i know). But he makes up with his very high spirit. Chargeeeeeee!
Mastodon

The article start  with elephant and end with elephant. I mean the wild and hairy ones: Mastodon. It's certainly stronger than regular elephant what with its bigger body size and bigger tusks. Fortunately for the mastodons, there's no Legolas in game. Otherwise he alone can kill one of them then Gimli comments "That only counts as one!"

That's it for now. I will show you some of siege-engine-class units in future. Bye!
